Welcome

Welcome to webpage of the Hull and District Local History Research Group

The group is made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds who share a common interest in the history of Hull and the surrounding area. We meet every Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. In the summer months we tend to have more field trips and in the winter months concentrate indoors on our projects.

At present we are based at Humberside Police Youth and Community Centre, Elm Avenue, Garden Village, Hull. Some of the events this year have included guest speakers, visits to museums, guildhalls, churches, archive centres and other local interests. Members also have led numerous walks around villages in the East Riding, with several in Beverley and Hull. There have been some very enjoyable barge trips from Beverley to Hull and back seeing the landscape and buildings from a different perspective.

Last year the Group researched, wrote and published its well-received book, ‘A Breath of Sculcoates' in association with Developing our Communities, Your Heritage Your Future. This year so far we have written and produced our very successful and acclaimed ‘The Local' which is a Journal of the Hull and District Local History Research Group. (copies of both still available)

Currently there are several major developments in progress by members including a Chronology of Hull, to be published as a CD-ROM. Researching historical trails, initially on Withernsea and the Newland area of Hull, to publish as a leaflet with maps. Hull's Treasures is a list of 251 historical structures (including telephone kiosks) listed as deserving protection but which don't meet the 'listed' criteria. These are currently being photographed and documented and will be published in stages as loose leaf books with the completed list being published as a CD-ROM (Book one of the  loose leaf books now published ).

To conclude – we The Hull and District Local History Group have had nearly 100 events in the 2 years of our existence, A co-operatively produced book successfully launched. Significant on-going research and recording activities, promoting new local studies writers, socializing with people who enjoy a common interest. We welcome new membership enquiries and can be contacted via our ‘Contact Us' link.
